  1. Harry Smith was an old friend of mine in New York. I met him through Lionel Ziprin back in the 1950’s.
We hung out together and he listened to “The Rise and fall Of the City Of Mahagonny” at my apartment
on the old vinyl album with Lotte Lenya (still have it) …I visited him at the Chelsea Hotel, and l thought
that his rent was being paid for by either Allan Ginsburg or the Grateful dead, or both. We would walk along
Saint Mark’s while he made hundreds of string figures and told their stories. Barbara Remington

    • Hi Barbara,

Thank you for sending this in. It improves my understanding of Harry’s fondness for string figures to learn from you that he used them to tell stories. I wasn’t sure if he loved string figures just for their beauty. You cleared that up for me by sharing this memory.

      So—–thank you!

I lived in New York ( 1979 -2006) while Harry was there, and I must have crossed paths with him, but I will never know.
